The 'defragger' is part of the utility software that comes with the operating system of a device. But it is worth mentioning here, within the hardware section, because it involves improving the performance of a Hard Disc Drive.
On a mechanical magnetic HDD, data can get stored out of sequence. This slows down the opening up of programs and files as the actuator arm has to find all the correct parts while the magnetic platters spin. A SSD (Solid State Drive) does not have this problem because there are no moving parts.
