Networks
The buttons below will take you to a revision page with a short video and a quiz.
For each topic, there are videos and a multiple choice quiz
You should work through the topics in order.
You need to understand why computers are connected to networs and to understand the differences between a Local Area Network (LAN) and a Wide Area Network (WAN).
You need to understand how the characteristics of wired and wireless connections impact on performance (speed, range, bandwidth, throughput and latency)
You need to understand that network speeds are measured in bits per second (kilobit, megabit, gigabit) and be able to construct expressions involving file size, transmission rate and time.
You need to understand the role and need for protocols (standard rules allow communication across devices and networks); understand the email protocols - SMTP(sending email), POP (receiving emails with the emails being deleted from the email server), IMAP (receiving emails with the emails remaining on the server.) HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, TCP/IP, Ethernet and WiFi
You need to understand the characteristics of the bus, star and mesh networks.
You need to understand how the 4 layer (Application, Transport, Internet, Link) TCP/IP model handles data transmission over a network. You need to understand how the internet is structured (IP addressing, routers)
You need to understand methods of network security, ways of identifying network vulnerabilities (penetration testing, ethical hacking) and methods of protecting networks (access control, physical security, firewalls)
